What is Eye Movement Desensitisation (EMDR) Therapy?
Very simply put, this amazing technique enables the brain to process old, accumulated/built-up feelings associated with past traumas, unpleasant memories and events that have become stuck and locked within the brain. Imagine over the years these feelings growing and stacking up. It’s hardly surprising that they become disruptive to everyday routines and make it difficult to function as one would want or prefer.
Who would benefit from EMDR Therapy??

Maybe an addiction, for example over eating, alcohol, gambling or excessive exercise is becoming out of your control, impacting your health and your family?

In the majority of cases, all of these behaviours have developed as a way of coping with the build-up of unprocessed emotional trauma, memories or events in our past that still bring back feelings of immense emotion such as hurt, anger, guilt, sadness. Feelings so powerful that they can overwhelm. Feelings that impact and effect us even now and these emotions affect the way we think about ourselves, our life and our future?
In order to deal with these feelings, people find ways to make themselves feel better, to numb the hurt or pain. These habits or patterns of behaviour provide people with the illusion of coping, but the habits in turn, often result in more unprocessed emotions and feelings. A pretty nasty vicious circle and one which if you’ve ever tried, is exceptionally hard to break.
In my opinion, which is based on the number of my clients who have been astounded by EMDR’s fast acting effects, EMDR is the most amazing, highly effective, trauma focussed therapy. In addition – and possibly one of the very best things about EMDR – it is not a talking therapy or counselling. For many people, this is such a relief, knowing they will not have to divulge details of traumatic events – if they don’t want to – nor will they have to relive vivid memories and experience the pain that comes with talking about such events.

EMDR enables the brain to process the feelings, which give us back our ability to cope with everyday life and then enables change to take place. Tackling the symptoms of the problem – anxiety, addiction fears/phobias – without addressing the underlying root cause, can only bring a reprieve from the feeling of being overwhelmed. Once the causes (the feelings associated with the past trauma) are processed, thoroughly and completely, our capacity to tolerate and cope with stress is restored.
EMDR Therapy truly is such an amazing, highly effective therapy that has virtually an immediate effect. Change has never been so easy to achieve!
